SFA Field Campers at the Grand Tetons in Wyoming. Sitting on the ground, L-R: Thomas Tracy and Matt Bartell. On the wall: B. J. Burch, Deanna Stout, Mindy Shaw, Wes Palmer, Dr. Barker, Dr. Nielson, Rebekah Franke, Meghan Johnston, Nathan Treptow, Jason Hollowman (squatting), Marty Dyess, Tim Post and John Beller (or is that Ferrel Killian?).
Here's a big version of this picture. (You may have to click on the resulting image to see it full size.)
Most of these pictures were taken by Deanna, here dipping her feet in a Utah lake. Thank you, Deanna!
Back at the beginning, in Texas, in front of El Capitan.
Looking at volcanics in the Davis Mountains, Texas. Angela P in the pink.
Field mapping in New Mexico.
Made it to the top of the peak!
Relaxing at a campsite: Jason, BJ, Marty, John, Wes and Meghan.
We stopped one day to look at the Santa Rita mine near Silver City, NM.
Jason illustrates the dips of these folded and faulted rocks.
The profs watched this bear meander along the edge of Oowah Lake in Utah, eating fishermen's bait, sitting on a log and scooping a fish out of the water, and just generally enjoying his afternoon. Eventually the bear got closer and closer to us, then appeared to be leaving as he made his way past us through the brush (next picture).
But instead of leaving, he got directly up-hill from us and then suddenly reared up out of the bushes, slapped his front paws on the ground, and woofed at us! We got the message loud and clear -- he wanted us out of his territory! So we said, "Yes, sir," and left!
During this field camp we went to the AAPG convention in Denver -- and then on the student field trip to Wyoming. That gave us a chance to see Yellowstone National Park and the Grand Tetons (above), the youngest mountain range in the Rockies.
Rebekah stands next to a van decorated with stickers from lots of different parks...
... And Deanna stands on the other side. Lots of miles, lots of geology, and a great experience for these field camp students.
