We had a great Homecoming in Fall of 2006!

We hope to see you this Fall! Start making plans to come back to Nac' for the Homecoming bonfire, parade, and game, plus tailgating with the geology gang, the Chili Cookoff, and a tour of the geology department. Here is some information about faculty activities this past year, and pictures from Homecoming Weekend.

Here is an update on our SFA Geology faculty:

Dr. R. LaRell Nielson is in his second year as chair of the Geology Department and has also been teaching stratigraphy and paleo. He is still adviser of the Geology Club and the AAPG Student Chapter. He presented a paper and co-led a field trip along the Texas coast at Texas Academy of Science.

Dr. Volker Gobel has been spending a lot of time with students working on research projects. He helped Kevin Ausburn present a paper and a poster at TAS and South-central GSA. He currently has a research grant to study pyrite in the Weches Formation in east Texas. Dr. Gobel is teaching one of his favorite courses, Optical Mineralogy.

Dr. Ernest Ledger has just finished writing a paper on arsenic in the Weches Formation and is presenting it at GCAGS, and continuing to do research on the distribution and location of arsenic in east Texas. He is also enjoying teaching courses on instrumentation here at SFA.

Dr. Chris Barker is teaching Structural Geology and other courses and is currently Chair of the Faculty Senate -- which means he is on more committees than he ever knew existed. He co-authored a paper on coastal processes and co-led a field trip to the coast for TAS. He spent June in the Silver City, NM, area working with a graduate student mapping mylonitic rocks near Bullard Peak. He is also the department webmaster and is always updating our web page. If you have any information you would like on the web page, please send it to him at cbarker@sfasu.edu.

Dr. Wesley Brown is our new faculty member who joined us this past Fall. He is a geophysicist who brings a fresh new perspective to the department. We're excited about the new courses he'll be able to offer in geophysics. Dr. Brown is from Jamaica and and recently finished his Ph.D. at UTEP.

Patricia Sharp is working hard with the education students teaching Geology 406 and helping students prepare for the state education exams. Pat recently returned from visiting her daughter Megan and Marine son-in-law in Okinawa.

Mindy Shaw is excited about teaching field trip courses and recently finished her Master's degree with Dr. Ledger. She has also been a great help teaching introductory geology courses and labs.

Shana Scott, our departmental administrative assistant, is still keeping the department moving forward with all of her hard work. She has been with us for five years.

Dr. William P. Roberts is retired -- but is teaching part-time at Shenandoah College and James Madison University in the mountains of western Virginia. He and Linda visited Nacogdohes last year and we had a great time seeing them.
