One of our weekend field trip courses is to the Magnet Cove/Hot Springs area of Arkansas. Students visit the 3M Syenite Quarry and the small town of Bauxite (named after the alumninum-rich mineral bauxite), hammer pieces of carbonatite, pan for pyrite in a stream, look for quartz in the Ron Coleman Quartz Mines, and dig for diamonds at Crater of Diamonds State Park.
