Last year's faculty position filled! The Geology Department recently hired a new faculty member, Dr. Wesley Brown, a geophysicist who graduated from UT-El Paso. Dr. Brown came on-board last Fall and is already proving to be a popular teacher. He is now offering our first geophysics course in several years and co-teaching the Arkansas weekend field trip. We are delighted to have him with us!

The Geology Department's student chapter of the AAPG (American Association of Petroleum Geologists) won the 2005 Outstanding Chapter Award!

We also went on the AAPG Student Field Trip, which was a spectacular visit to the overthrust belt of the Canadian Rockies. Almost half the people in the picture below are part of our SFA group. It was a little brisk on this June day. (Click on the thumbnail image to see a much larger picture.)

Last year, the student chapter of the AAPG went to the convention in Dallas and on the student field trip to the Arbuckle Mountains of Oklahoma. It was a great trip to classic structural locations and to two quarries. About 17 of the folks in this picture are from SFA, including the club's faculty advisor, Dr. LaRell Nielson (he's wearing a white hat!).
